Who is Coach Mateo?

A coach, a mentor, a lifelong athlete.

Born 1984 in Tokyo, Japan. (No, I'm not Japanese — but I do love sushi.) My father was a diplomat, so I grew up across Mexico, Brussels, London, California, Ottawa and Toronto.

After high school I studied Sports Psychology at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario — playing two years of Varsity Basketball and graduating with honors in 2007. As soon as I finished, I moved back to Mexico City to begin my career.

I was lucky to start working at the National Training Center (CNAR) as a sports psychologist and performance coach, gaining experience with more than 30 Olympic sports and working only with top Mexican athletes.

After 4 years I opened my private practice and my first fitness studio (2012), offering personal training, nutrition, coaching, sports psychology, rehab and more. Two years later, in 2014, I franchised my brand “Personal Trainer Mexico” and opened 5 more locations in the Mexico City area.

In 2019 I sold my locations and pivoted to online training and launched the Coach Mateo Fitness Podcast. When the pandemic started, I was ready: between 2020 and 2022 I sold over 10,000 memberships to my 21-day challenge (El Reto 21) and other programs.

In 2024 I moved with my family to Ottawa, Canada, to build a lifestyle around security, health, training and outdoor activity. Today I still work independently — coaching people of all ages, speaking at events, helping fitness businesses grow, and helping athletes perform at their best.

One day, while training one of my first clients at 20 years old, she said:
"Mateo, you saved my life. If it wasn't for you, I would be dead… You have a gift, so please never give up on people." That was the day I understood my purpose.

My goal is to help you be better than you were yesterday.
